Markets never sleep

As an intraday trader, Tomas must stay focused and ready to take action at any moment. He must be open to new opportunities and keep himself up to date at all times, which in some ways means that he keeps up with work 24/7.

When you work as a trader, no two days are ever the same. You could even say that no two minutes are ever going to be the same. The job is essentially all about being first in the market, so you have to act quickly and precisely to maximise your profit from market movements, which change every second.

“In some ways, you have to act like a child who is constantly curious and creative. It helps you find new opportunities and ways to get involved. I have a rule called IPDE. It stands for: Identifying opportunities, predicting market movements, deciding how and when to get in or out, and, lastly, executing and pulling the trigger. This is the beauty of trading and what gives you that adrenaline rush,” reveals Tomas, who works as a trader in the Intraday team.

When you work with such small fluctuations and mostly 24-hour time horizons, it is crucial that you have good internal communication and that you share your insights with the rest of the team, which culminates in the best possible forecasts in the market, Tomas explains.

I think we have a really strong Intraday team, because we are all similar, yet different at the same time. Similar because we share a mutual goal of getting the most out of what we do. And different, because we not only have different skills and strengths, but we also sometimes notice different things in the market

“I think we have a really strong Intraday team, because we are all similar, yet different at the same time. Similar because we share a mutual goal of getting the most out of what we do. And different, because we not only have different skills and strengths, but we also sometimes notice different things in the market,” says Tomas, elaborating:

“Winning is great and feels awesome, but you also take a hit sometimes, which can be a bit emotional. In moments like these, it is important to trust your gut feeling, keep a cool head and move forward. Having a skilled and supportive team who is always ready to jump in and give you a hand is amazing.”

Tomas started as a trade assistant in the Intraday team in 2017 and became a trader after the first year. Tomas is originally from Lithuania, which is where he earned his bachelor's degree in Financial Economics. In 2015, he moved to Odense with his girlfriend to study for a master’s degree in International Business and Marketing, and only planned to stay in Denmark for a couple of years. Shortly after finishing his master's degree, his girlfriend became his wife. For now, they are both happy in their jobs, so their stay in Denmark is now indefinite.

“I really enjoy working at Energi Denmark. I believe we are one of the best energy trading companies in the market, with big growth potential as a company, which also gives me great potential for personal development. Since the energy market is still relatively young, it keeps changing, which makes improving your skills and learning new ones important. Energi Danmark is always ready to help and invest in you. For me personally, it means that I have been learning about R-coding and improving my Danish,” says Tomas.

In his spare time, Tomas loves to keep fit and also trades stock on his own. However, his investments are more long-term. Keeping fit not only helps him stay healthy, but also helps clear his head after work. Aside from being an extra source of income, trading stock helps him stay up to date with the global economy.
